How did Vespa evolve into a thriving supplier of state-of-the-art scooters and auxiliary equipment? It began immediately following World War II when Piaggio emerged from the conflict with its Pontedera plant completely demolished by bombing. Italy's crippled economy and the disastrous state of the roads hampered re-development of the automobile markets.

Enrico Piaggio, the son of Piaggio's founder Rinaldo Piaggio, left the aeronautical field to address Italy's urgent need for a modern and affordable mode of transportation. The idea was to design a vehicle for the masses that could get post war Italy moving again.

Corradino D'Ascanio, an aeronautical engineer responsible for the design and construction of the first modern helicopter, was given the job of designing a simple, robust and affordable vehicle. The vehicle had to be easy to drive for both men and women, be able to carry a passenger and not soil the driver or passenger's clothing. D'Ascanio, who could not stand motorbikes, dreamed up a revolutionary vehicle. Drawing on his knowledge of aeronautics, he designed a vehicle built on a frame with a handlebar gear and the engine mounted on the rear wheel. The front fork, like an aircraft's landing gear, allowed for easy wheel changing.

The Vespa was conceived by Enrico Piaggio in the spring of 1946. The first Vespa was one of fifteen that left the Pontedera plant in April. It had a 98cc two-stroke engine delivering 3.5 hp at 4,500 revolutions and reached 60 kilometers per hour. This was a real two-wheel utility vehicle that did not resemble an uncomfortable and noisy motorbike, but instead emanated class and elegance. That class and elegance has been enhanced over the last 60 years with design changes, new materials of construction, unique paints and finishes and the adoption of quality processes and systems for continuous improvement in comfort and reliability. Partner up with the machine of your choice to experience the thrill of Vespa ownership first hand.
