Captivated by the fresh and savvy style of European markets, two young grocers from Detroit, John Jonna and John Lossia, sought to introduce accessible gourmet food and wine to Metro Detroiters. In 1971, their ideas were realized when they joined Ed Jonna to create Merchant of Vino. If you are local, then you know their creative talents built one of the best gourmet food and wine stores in US today.

Within 15 years the vino chain had grown into 7 stores and gained the recognition as one of the top 25 Wine Stores in the nation by the Wine Spectator. The chain was eventually sold in 1994, however, Jonna and Lossia were not finished perfecting their ideas of a full service gourmet market.

Their second endeavor is Merchant's Fine Wine which has quickly developed into two locations in Grosse Pointe Woods and Dearborn. Today, the growing chain holds recognition by Food and Wine Magazine as one of the Top Wine Markets in the Midwest for selection, and advice. Real Detroit Magazine recently awarded Merchant's Fine Wine Best Store in Detroit.

With the success of the new stores, Jonna and Lossia have combined their extraordinary knowledge of food, wine, and service to create a premium food service operation. Our Dearborn location coordinates catering for both stores and services any type of event, be it a small sit-down dinner, cocktail reception, birthday party, executive luncheon, or small wedding.

Merchant's Fine Wine also specializes in maintaining corporate accounts with clients that include Wayne County RESA, Pfizer Pharmaceutical, Merrill Lynch, and the University of Michigan.
